Safety score = on-campus Clery incidents / (enrollment/1,000). Source: U.S. Dept. of Education, OPE Campus Safety & Security Survey.

This leaderboard starts above a rate of 0.00: 319 eligible campuses reported zero on-campus incidents for the year, which can reflect genuine safety or incomplete reporting, so we don't rank a literal zero as "the safest" - those campuses are shown with their real reported number on their own profile pages instead. See methodology.

What to do with this ranking

A national list is a starting point, not a verdict on any one campus.

Figures reflect the June 2026 Clery Act reporting release as filed with the U.S. Department of Education.

How PlainCampus rankings are compiled

Our rankings are computed directly from the upstream Clery Act dataset, not editorially curated and not influenced by advertisers. Each ranking surfaces a clear, reproducible metric (incident rate per 1,000 enrolled students), and the underlying numbers are visible on each campus page so you can verify them. We recompute rankings whenever the upstream data refreshes, and we publish the refresh cadence on the methodology page.

What rankings mean (and what they do not)

A ranking is a useful lens, it tells you where to start looking, but it is not a final judgment about safety. A high per-1,000 rate at a small campus can reflect a handful of reports, and a low rate at a large campus can mask localized risk. Rate-based rankings normalize for enrollment, but reporting culture, campus geography, and residential mix all shape the raw counts. Read every ranking alongside the campus detail page. These rankings are for informational purposes only and do not constitute safety, security, legal, or enrollment advice, and they cannot predict any individual student's experience; see our appropriate use guidance before drawing conclusions about any school.

Methodology, sources, and corrections

Every ranking is derived from the U.S. Department of Education OPE Campus Safety and Security Survey linked on the methodology page. We do not blend proprietary signals or substitute editor opinion for data. If you believe a ranking is miscomputed or a campus is misclassified, contact us with the specific institution and the expected correction, and we will investigate within the next refresh cycle.
