Under the Jeanne Clery Act, in force since November 1990, every Title IV college must disclose on-campus crime, so a 40,000-student university will almost always out-report a 1,200-student college in raw totals, regardless of how safe each campus actually is. According to the U.S. Department of Education's Campus Safety and Security Survey for the 2024 reporting year (the same year behind the incident totals and the per-1,000 safety score on this site), the largest institutions dominate this list on volume alone, then fall back toward the middle once their figures are expressed per 1,000 enrolled students.
